100 Pieces Project #22
My Life Is in My Hands
Found-object sculpture, wire mesh, copper wire, beads, buttons, brass chain, and watch fob
This heart-shaped pouch of wire netting is filled with the things a life collects. Through the mesh you can see a jumble of glass and stone beads in amber, yellow, turquoise, and violet, big turquoise and orange buttons, and an old key lying diagonally across the middle. The netting is strong enough to hold all of it, yet open enough that every experience stays visible.
The heart is sewn closed with loops of copper wire that curl and spiral along its edges, a hand-stitched seam that is part mending, part decoration. A brass chain loops from the upper edge and ends in an old watch fob, a simple metal bar that works like a clasp. It is there to keep the heart close, and the title says why: my life is in my hands.
The mood is generous. The heart doesn’t hide anything. It holds every bead, button, and key openly and invites you to look in and take it all in. The wire is malleable, shaped by hand into a heart and able to bend and adapt around what it holds, which makes the piece feel both resilient and open to whatever life adds next.
