Running Free
Sculptural assemblage
A tiny paper clip figure, the artist herself, races across the crest of a green hill with one leg stretched out in mid-stride and her hair streaming in the wind. She holds a bundle of thin white cords that rise to a flutter of ribbon-like flags in sky blue, lavender, lime green, and sunny yellow. Each flag is a different texture and shade, and they all stream in the same direction as if a breeze is carrying them. These happy colors are her joy.
The figure is small, with a wire body dressed in scraps of purple and blue and topped with tufts of copper-colored hair, but she takes up the whole sky. The hill beneath her is sculpted by hand in deep, mottled greens, rolling and uneven like real ground. Nothing holds her back here. She is outside, in motion, and lighter than air.
The mood is idealistic. This is the world as the artist hopes it can be, a place where she is free to run, to be happy, and to let her joy fly overhead like banners.
