Generations

This found-object shadow box stands tall and narrow, like a tower, with four compartments in teal. It reads from the bottom up as a generational journey of women.

At the base, vintage portraits of women in ornate frames sit against aged, text-covered paper. They are the ancestors the piece rests on. Above them, a small horse stands on a patch of moss and tiny flowers, set among broken mirror pieces. It stands for the strength women have had to find in the hardest of times, and the shards catch the light as a reminder that resilience can come out of what has been broken.

In the middle, Frida Kahlo stands relaxed with her hands in her pockets, framed by a collection of vintage buttons. She represents the women who kept making art and creative work no matter what. The buttons, gathered from many lives and garments, suggest the everyday history of women’s work. Above her, a pink tree glittering with purple beads and ringed by purple blossoms is the spiritual insight that comes from being yourself. At the very top, a compartment of glittering gold holds the strength earned over a lifetime as a woman in society.
