Rorschach portrait
Rorschach Portrait
A Rorschach test asks what you see, and the answer says more about the viewer than the image. That is the idea here. We all look at life differently, shaped by our own experiences, memories, and histories. One person sees a butterfly, another sees a mask, another sees a face looking back. None of them is wrong.
This sculptural head is covered from crown to base in black and white inkblots, like a Rorschach test spread across a face. Each blot is a Rorschach print I made myself, then copied at different sizes and cut out by hand. The cut pieces were layered onto an a Styrofoam head, so the shapes range from tiny marks to bold, sweeping forms. Many read as butterflies, leaves, or wings. Some are dense and solid, others softly speckled and worn, set against a white ground.
Look at her and notice what you see.
Materials: Styrofoam head, hand-made Rorschach ink prints, copied and cut paper, adhesive, gloss finish.
